The human body needs oxygen to live; therefore, it is important to keep the respiratory system in excellent condition. Strengthening lung health requires some care and exercise that increases the capacity of the lungs.

When exercising, the heart and lungs are activated. The lungs oxygenate the body, provide energy and eliminate carbon dioxide. On the other hand, the heart takes care of pumping oxygen to the muscles involved in exercise. This is how the organism purifies itself and keeps itself full of energy.

But how is it possible to strengthen lung health? Simple: breathing. Most exercises that contribute to lung health require correct, intense breathing. These exercises will not only help people who have breathing difficulties, but also those who are in good health.

1. Breathing through the diaphragm

The way to breathe correctly is to use the diaphragm  so that the lungs expand and fill even more with oxygen. Not everyone has mastered this type of breathing, however, with practice, it can be done. You just have to concentrate.

How is it done?

  • First, relax your upper body and place one hand on your abdomen.
  • Then breathe deeply through your nose and make your abdomen inflate,  then expel the air as slowly as possible.
  • If as you exhale, your abdomen contracts, you are breathing correctly.
  • Repeat the exercise 5 times and rest between each repetition. Try to do this as many times a day as possible to get your body used to breathing properly.

2. Aerobic exercises

Do aerobic exercise such as jogging, walking, running or dancing. This  will cause your heart rate to increase and therefore need more oxygen. 

When the body undergoes these types of activities, it demands a greater amount of oxygen, which is why it must control your breathing and take in all the air you need. This causes your lung capacity to increase.

Interval exercises are very good for strengthening lung health  because of their demanding level. The body varies its oxygen demands according to the intensity of exercise. So, you should take control of your breathing to keep moving.

How is it done?

  • A simple interval exercise is to jog for 4 minutes and run for 1.
  • You can vary the exercise to brisk walking-jogging if you don’t have as much stamina to run for a minute.

The important thing is that you always stay longer at the lowest intensity and less time when increasing the speed. Furthermore,  this type of exercise also helps to burn fat.

3. Blow for as long as possible

Another exercise that contributes to lung health is to blow for as long as you can. You can practice several modalities, one of them is to blow a balloon. There is also a very fun one where you can use a strip of paper.

How is it done?

  • First, take a strip of paper and place it on the tip of your nose.
  • Then inhale and then blow out as long as you can to keep the strap in the air.
  • Practice often so you can keep the paper strip in the air for much longer.

4. Yoga helps to strengthen lung health

Yoga is also a very beneficial exercise for lung health. It helps to control your breathing, bringing your body and mind into harmony.

How is it done?

In addition to physical yoga,  practice “pranayama”, which is the basic breathing technique in yoga. This modality teaches breathing and develops lung capacity, bringing more resistance to physical activities.

  • You should take long, deep breaths and exhale slowly.
  • The ideal posture or asana for doing pranayama is the lotus posture. This requires sitting with your spine straight and so it is possible for air to flow more easily.

If you feel that sometimes you are short of air or that you need to breathe better, demand a little more and take control of your breathing.
