Having swollen lips is something that can happen to everyone at some point. This can usually be due to dryness in the area, a bump, an insect sting, or simply a change in temperature.

When the cause is not an allergic reaction or a serious problem that requires medical attention,  we can turn to some home remedies for relief.

Home Remedies for Swollen Lips

According to popular wisdom, the following remedies can help treat swollen lips. Their properties are not scientifically proven, but still, there are those who use them.

1. Turmeric

Turmeric Powder Helps Heal Swollen Lips


  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder (15 g)
  • 1 teaspoon of Fuller’s earth (7 g)
  • 3 tablespoons of water (45 ml)

What should you do

  • In a small bowl, mix the turmeric with the Fuller earth and add 3 tablespoons of cold water, and stir to form a paste.
  • Apply the mixture to the affected area and let it dry. Then remove it with warm water.
  • Finally, you can apply it twice a day, until the swelling goes away.

2. Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a plant widely used in cosmetics and skin care. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a good natural alternative for treating swollen lips.

What should you do

  • Peel and wash the leaf well to remove the yellowish secretion.
  • Once the gel is extracted from the plant, rub it into the affected area until it is well absorbed.
  • Repeat the procedure 2 or 3 times a day.

3. Coconut or oil

Coconut and oil are good options to apply on swollen and dry lips. Thus, a cocoa butter bar, easily found in pharmacies, supermarkets and other stores will not be your only ally.

NOTE: apply a little oil whenever you feel discomfort or just want to moisturize your lips. A few drops will suffice. 

4. Black tea bags

Black tea contains tannins that give it astringent properties.anti-inflammatory, which can relieve swollen lips.


  • 1 black tea bag
  • 1 cup of water (250 ml)

What you should do? 

  • Heat the water to heat.
  • Soak the black tea bag in the water and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  • As soon as it’s cool or bearable heat that doesn’t burn you, place the bag on your lip and leave it for 10 minutes. You can repeat the procedure 3 or 4 times a day.

5. Honey 


Honey is also an excellent natural source of hydration that will help reduce lip swelling.

What you should do? 

  • Take a spoon of honey.
  • Dip a sterile cotton swab or gauze into honey and gently rub it over your lips.
  • Leave for a few minutes and rinse.
  • Repeat the procedure 3 times a day.

6. Dark Chocolate

Like black tea, dark chocolate has flavonoids  and therefore anti-inflammatory properties that can help you get relief if you have swollen lips.

What you should do?

  • Take a piece of dark chocolate. Preferably without sugar and with a percentage of cocoa above 50%.
  • Place the chocolate in a large spoon and heat over low heat for a few minutes until melted.
  • Turn off the heat, blow on the melted chocolate a little, and carefully apply it to your lips.
  • Let it act for some time and then rinse with warm water.
  • Repeat the procedure several times a day.
