Light products  catch the attention of people struggling with excess weight. However, are they really as good as they say? Remember, first, that the body weight became a concern  of  health most important of this century.

Light products are characterized by providing fewer calories than their traditional version. This is achieved by restricting the amount of fat in the product. However, on many occasions, the amount of simple sugars in foods remains unchanged or even increased.

On the other hand,  trans is usually not a good idea. Fat-soluble vitamins, such as group D, are dissolved in this nutrient, thus reducing the contribution of micronutrients to the body.

Continuing with the case of vitamin D, it is an endemic deficiency nutrient; if we further reduce their contribution, we could cause a health problem in the medium or long term.

The reserves of this micronutrient are limited; in addition, its deficit is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular or inflammatory pathologies, according to an article published in the Annual Review of Medicine.

Despite the fact that the caloric density of light products is lower than that of their equivalents, sometimes, knowing that we are dealing with a lighter product, we tend to ingest a greater amount of it. Therefore, the total energy consumed is greater than if we opted for the classic variety.

As if that were not enough,  a larger volume of this product implies an even greater contribution of simple sugars and even additives. Thus, our health status can be affected in the medium and long term.

How to plan a diet correctly?

Instead of looking for less calorie foods on the market, it  is better to base your diet on fresh, natural products. Reducing consumption of processed foods is beneficial in terms of reducing calories, sugars and additives.

This invariably translates into a reduced risk of developing complex illnesses such as diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders associated with food.

In addition,  we should choose less aggressive and low-oil cooking methods. Thus, we limit the production of toxic and harmful substances for the body, such as acrylamide.

On the other hand, we should not neglect the intake of healthy fats, although these should come from oily fish, oilseeds and vegetable oils. Limiting the intake of animal fat (although there is controversy on this point) and trans fat can lead to improved health.

Light products offer a variety of foods with fewer calories. However, we cannot stop reading the labels carefully. In many occasions, the caloric reduction is due to the suppression of fats, which is compensated in the level of palatability with the addition of more simple sugars.

This, added to the tendency to consume more of this type of product due to the lack of concern with caloric balance, can lead to a progressive deterioration in food quality.

A healthy lifestyle is one that  combines a varied and balanced diet with regular exercise. To achieve the former, we need to increase consumption of fresh, natural foods and reduce consumption of processed products.

Although it is possible to choose a light variety , it is not convenient to neglect the consumption of fats, especially mono and polyunsaturated fats.
