How Many Years Of Life Does Smoking Take Away From You?

According to data revealed by the World Health Organization, every year 6 million people die from smoking. Quit the smoking habit now!

Many people still think that the smoking habit is something harmless and, until they don’t suffer its serious consequences, they don’t come to realize how harmful it can be to their health.

Cigarettes are composed of a large amount of toxic substances that affect a large part of the body’s organs and, in the long term, can cause serious diseases such as cancer.

The smoking habit decreases life expectancy and, in fact, this is one of the habits that causes more deaths worldwide. In addition to shortening life expectancy, smoking can also end youth.

In recent research, it has been determined that smoking can take up to 10 years of life, affecting many of the body’s organs and also speeding up skin aging.

According to data revealed by the World Health Organization, every year 6 million people die due to cigarettes, of which 5 million correspond to smokers and 1 million to passive smokers.

Smoking is a habit that deteriorates health in general and, according to real data worldwide, it produces more deaths than the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the use of alcohol and illegal drugs.

What happens when smoking?

Smoking increases the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer and skin cancer, among other types of cancers.

In a study by American, Canadian and British scientists, it was determined that a person can lose up to 10 years of life from smoking.

This study aimed to determine the dangers of tobacco use and the benefits of giving up smoking, and was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

To carry out this study, scientists gathered data from nearly 217,000 adults in the United States between 1997 and 2004. In those data, they found that the death rate of a smoker is three times that of a person who do not smoke.

Most of these deaths were due to smoking-related illnesses.

The study found that people who don’t smoke are twice as likely to live to age 80 compared to people who smoke. That is, tobacco not only affects people in old age, but also in middle age.

The good news is that the study was also able to determine that people who quit smoking early can gain up to 10 years of life.

Those who stopped smoking between 25 and 34 years old, between 35 and 44 years old, and between 45 and 54 years old, gained, respectively, approximately ten, nine and six years of life.

Is it possible to stop smoking?

Smoking is a very difficult habit to quit, but it’s not impossible. When wanting to quit smoking, people can suffer from anxiety and other withdrawal symptoms that will make them believe that it is impossible to quit this bad habit.

However, with decision and a positive mind it is possible to quit smoking, although it is necessary to make several attempts. If you are willing to quit this addiction right now, consider the following methods:

  • Quitting smoking immediately: This is possibly the most difficult method to apply, but the most beneficial. Quitting smoking suddenly gives very good results and the big advantage is that you will be stopping its negative effects once and for all.
  • Stop smoking slowly: If you definitely don’t feel able to give up smoking overnight, try reducing the amount of cigarettes you consume each day until there are none left. Start by smoking half of the cigarettes and, day by day, reduce that amount.
  • Nicotine Alternatives: Nicotine alternative methods consist of using a series of products that replace the high amounts of nicotine in cigarettes with smaller amounts. Replacement products can be adhesives, chewing gum, pills or nasal atomizers, among others. This method is good for reducing cigarette cravings until you are able to quit completely.
  • Acupuncture: This traditional technique in Chinese medicine can help control cravings for smoking. It’s relaxing and can be of great help to anyone who is motivated to quit smoking.
