To carry out this study, scientists gathered data from nearly 217,000 adults in the United States between 1997 and 2004. In those data, they found that the death rate of a smoker is three times that of a person who do not smoke.
Most of these deaths were due to smoking-related illnesses.
The study found that people who don’t smoke are twice as likely to live to age 80 compared to people who smoke. That is, tobacco not only affects people in old age, but also in middle age.
The good news is that the study was also able to determine that people who quit smoking early can gain up to 10 years of life.
Those who stopped smoking between 25 and 34 years old, between 35 and 44 years old, and between 45 and 54 years old, gained, respectively, approximately ten, nine and six years of life.
