How Noise Affects Mood

Noise affects mood and obviously hearing health. The effects of noise range from causing bad mood to causing deafness.
How noise affects mood

In recent years, science has concluded that noise affects mood. First, it is worth noting that excessive noise causes deafness and that this problem brings with it a set of additional psychological difficulties.

Second, the  noise, by itself, is an aggressive stimulus to the brain. Sounds such as alarms, horns, sirens and the like are received by the body as an alert signal, which is also responded to with an alert state. The result is increased stress, one of the main ways in which noise affects mood.

On the other hand,  excessive sounds cause overstimulation in the brain. This noise is almost always present simultaneously with the development of daily activities. This means that you need to address different fronts at the same time and may have your cognitive performance compromised. This is another way in which noise affects mood.

How noise affects mood

The noise of big cities

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the maximum noise level should not exceed 65 decibels. If this level is exceeded, there will be a negative impact on people’s social behavior. Specifically, anxiety , irritability and the feeling of helplessness increase.

Likewise, according to available data, seven out of ten people say that noise prevents them from concentrating. Noise affects attention span and can lead to long-term memory and learning problems. Furthermore, the vast majority of people are in a bad mood when there is too much noise in their environment.

Another way in which noise affects mood manifests itself during sleep. People need a quiet environment to fall asleep. If there are sounds in the environment, insomnia often appears or sleep is interrupted. This has several psychological and physical consequences.

aural architecture

The term aural architecture refers to how noise affects mood. Science has established that the acoustic properties of a house, a building or any construction directly affect the  emotions people’s. That’s what aural architecture is all about.

Experts in the field point out that the way a structure is built determines its acoustic properties and, in turn, directly affect people’s mood. Aural architecture is about the design of each location and the materials from which it is built.

One of the scholars on this subject is Trevor Cox, an acoustic engineer at the University of Salford in Manchester, UK. He points out that structures like the one in Santa Sofia, Turkey, have such an acoustic aesthetic that, upon entering the premises, you experience a sense of peace and spirituality.

A study in this regard revealed that  hearing a tone briefly at 110 Hz reduces activity in speech centers  and transfers activity to brain regions associated with abstraction and creativity.

music and humor

Listen to loud music

The influence of sounds is so important that there is already an entire area dedicated to music-based study and therapy. In this sense, a study carried out by the universities of Bari (Italy) and Helsinki (Finland) indicated that music alters the biochemistry of emotions.

The study, published in the journal  Nature , indicates that  changes in dopamine receptors were observed with musical stimulation. This research is a first approach that seeks to shape non-pharmacological treatments for mood disorders.

Currently, music treatments have shown benefits in people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and the results are encouraging. So if music has all that power, it’s clear that sound can also affect mood in the opposite direction.

Prevention and recommendations

Large cities have problems with noise pollution and ideally everyone should commit to reducing the noise level in their daily lives. Voluntary actions such as not honking the horn if not necessary, avoiding loud music, or refraining from speaking too loudly would help a lot.

Finally, it is also important to wear hearing protection elements when someone is in a noisy environment that is impossible to control. Likewise, it pays to seek quiet times on a regular basis.
