The PERMA Model Or Theory Of Well-being

The PERMA model or welfare theory

The PERMA model, or well-being theory, helps us feel more satisfied with life and therefore have a more positive attitude. There are those who say that happiness should not be sought, but built, and therefore, each one of us has in our hands the power to be happy.

Based on positive psychology, we can interpret emotions and learn to enjoy small moments. When we change our attitude towards the world and adopt positive emotions, our well-being increases.

What is the PERMA model?

The American psychologist Martin Seligman created this model, and it was he who pointed out the way forward to maintain positive attitudes and thoughts throughout our lives.

By applying this model, a person can not only increase their level of well-being, but also help others around them feel happy. Seligman said:

It is important to highlight that the PERMA model does not intend to eliminate negative emotions, but rather to increase positive ones. Some of these positive emotions are gratitude, peace, love, curiosity, inspiration, hope, among others, and they all allow us to feel good about life.

Not surprisingly, some studies claim that people with a positive outlook on life tend to have more fun than the rest and feel safer and better about themselves. For this reason, this type of theory is considered an “unforced choice”, as people freely choose those decisions that allow them to have more well-being in their lives.

What does the PERMA model mean?

In 1999, Seligman would have already made an outline of what would be his theory when presenting a proposal entitled “The 3 paths to happiness”. PERMA is actually an acronym that refers to the five elements that allow each individual to experience well-being in their lives based on the elements that are exposed in this theory.

P: Positive Emotions

It refers to the increase of positive emotions to better face certain situations. They make it easier to deal with negative emotions.

E: Engagement

It means “commitment” and  refers to the agreement we make with ourselves  to reach a channel of flow where consciousness prevails. Our commitment will occur when we are dedicated to certain activities and can enjoy them.

It’s that moment when we do something we love and time seems to stand still. We focus only on what we do, in the present.

A: Relationships

These are the relationships we establish with other people. It refers to the network of connection that allows us to connect with humanity and not be closed in on ourselves.

We are sociable beings and, therefore, this point allows us to increase our well-being, as we find support and protection in others.

M: Meaning

“Meaning” and “purpose”. With that, we seek to transcend through the connections and causes that are bigger than us. To experience well-being, it is essential that each of us find meaning in our lives.

A: Accomplishment (Accomplishments)

These are personal achievements, but we also often use them to serve others. The achievement of personal goals helps us to feel more autonomy, and this is achieved through the improvement of our skills.

If we set a goal to work on these factors, we can feel whole and promote well-being most of the time. However, we shouldn’t force ourselves to do this.

Ultimately, the best thing about this model of spontaneous choice is that we work with those elements that we feel more attuned to,  and that are not assumed in an imposed or mandatory way.
